Why International Recruiters Almost Always Ask for Word
Word (.docx) is the de facto standard for CV submissions across the UK, Europe, Australia, and most international markets — and for a practical reason.
When a London recruiter is presenting your profile to five different clients, they need to reformat, anonymize, or adjust your CV quickly. Word makes this possible. A PDF does not. International staffing agencies, executive search firms, and in-house talent teams worldwide explicitly request Word CVs for exactly this reason.
“Wensa’s 14 Word CV templates are built for this workflow: clean formatting that holds up after editing, consistent styles that don’t break when someone adjusts your content.”
It isn’t only agencies, either. Public-sector employers and older enterprise recruitment systems in several Commonwealth markets still explicitly request .docx — a legacy of ATS installations built before PDF parsing matured, and still running today.
Adapting Your Word CV for Different International Markets
One of Word’s key advantages is flexibility — the same template adjusts to different market requirements without starting over:
- UK and Commonwealth: Keep to two pages, add a personal profile section, set spell-check to English (UK) via Tools → Language. Remove date of birth and nationality unless specifically requested.
- Germany and DACH region: Add a photo section to the header area, include a brief personal data section, expand to three pages if needed. Switch spell-check to German for local companies.
- Australia: Remove all personal information beyond contact details. Keep writing results-focused. Trim ruthlessly — Australian employers value conciseness.
- Middle East and Asia-Pacific: International employers follow global norms. Local companies may have different expectations — research specific requirements before applying.
Metadata and Tracked Changes: The Risk of Sending Your CV Across Borders
A .docx file carries more than the words on the page. According to Microsoft’s own documentation, a Word file can retain author name, creation date, comments, and tracked-changes history as hidden metadata — even changes you think you already “accepted.”
This is a bigger risk for an internationally-travelling CV than a domestic one, because it rarely stays in one pair of hands. A mentor reviews it with Track Changes on before you leave your home country; an agency in London reformats it before forwarding to a client in Dubai; a career coach adds comments you meant to delete. Each step can leave a trace. Open Document Properties on the file that finally lands in a hiring manager’s inbox, and you may find someone else’s name sitting in the “Author” field, or a page of red strikethrough text nobody meant them to see.
Before you send a Word CV abroad
- Review tab → Accept → Accept All Changes and Stop Tracking
- Review tab → Delete → Delete All Comments in Document
- File → Info → Check for Issues → Inspect Document, then remove everything it flags
- File → Info: confirm the “Author” field shows your own name, not a reviewer’s or an agency’s
- Confirm the file extension is .docx, not the legacy .doc
File → Info shows no tracked changes, no comments, and the author field displays your own name — saved as .docx.
Red strikethrough text, comment bubbles in the margin, and a mentor’s or agency’s name still sitting in the author field when it reaches the hiring manager.

Word CV Formatting Rules That Travel Well
- Use standard fonts — Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman — that are installed on systems worldwide
- Apply built-in heading styles rather than manually formatted text so structure stays intact across Word versions
- Avoid tables and text boxes in any section you want parsed by ATS — use standard paragraph formatting instead
- Set document language proofing correctly for your target market (UK vs. US English)
- Save a PDF version for direct-to-employer submissions where you control the format

FAQ — Word CV Templates
Why do international recruiters often request a Word CV specifically?
A .docx file is the easiest format for a recruiter or hiring manager to open, comment on, and forward internally without compatibility issues — especially across older enterprise systems still common outside the US.
Can a Word CV reveal who else has edited it before it reaches an employer?
Yes — Word’s metadata can retain a previous reviewer’s name in the “Author” field, plus tracked changes and comments, even after you think you’ve cleaned the file. This matters more for a CV that passes through a mentor, coach, or overseas agency before reaching the employer. See the metadata section above for the fix.
Can I manage multiple country-specific versions of my CV in Word?
Yes, and it’s one of the simplest ways to do it — though Google Docs makes managing simultaneous versions for different markets slightly easier. See the Word vs. Google Docs section on this page for the full comparison.
What’s the US equivalent of a Word CV?
A Word resume — same format for the American market. See our Word resume templates.
