Two chemical engineers can graduate from the same program and write resumes that look nothing alike — one built for a refinery, the other for a bioreactor suite. Hiring managers read them that way too: they want to see the plant, the process, and the number you moved.
Below are 10 chemical engineer resume examples, from entry-level to lead engineer, plus the specializations that change what a resume should say: process, process safety, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and process development. Applying outside the US? The chemical engineer CV examples cover chartership and international formats.
10 Chemical Engineer Resume Examples for 2026
Start with the example closest to the job you want, then swap in your own plant, scale, and results. The gallery alternates between experience levels and specialized roles, so you can compare how the same skills read at different points in a career.
Entry-Level Chemical Engineer
Built for a new graduate with one or two internships. The senior design project sits near the top as real engineering work, with the unit operation, the simulation tool, and the outcome all named.
- Treats the capstone design as project experience, with scale and result attached
- Names Aspen Plus, MATLAB, and lab techniques once each instead of a vague “technical skills” line
- Lists FE exam status and ABET-accredited degree in the education block
Process Engineer
For chemical engineers who run and improve a production unit day to day. Every bullet ties a process change to throughput, yield, or energy use, which is the language plant managers use when they decide who to interview.
Example result: raised a distillation train’s throughput by 9% with revised reflux and tray modifications, avoiding a capital expansion.
Chemical Engineer (Mid-Level)
The closest match to a general “chemical engineer” search: about four years of experience split between plant support and project work. The layout is a single column with reverse-chronological experience, and a skills block that groups tools, standards, and methods.
It balances operations wins, like a 6% energy reduction on a steam system, with project scope, like a $2.1M capital upgrade delivered on budget.
Process Safety Engineer
For engineers whose job is preventing the incident rather than running the unit. The summary leads with facilitation scope (number of HAZOP nodes, PHAs, and revalidations) and the experience bullets are organized around the PSM elements the role actually owns.
- Quantifies scope: studies facilitated, action items closed, MOC reviews completed
- Uses the standard’s own vocabulary (PHA, MOC, PSSR, mechanical integrity) where a posting does
- Shows leadership of a cross-functional team, since facilitation is mostly people work
Senior Chemical Engineer
Eight to twelve years in, the resume shifts from tasks to ownership: a project portfolio, the engineers you mentored, and a PE license listed in the header. Fewer bullets per role, each one carrying a dollar figure or a safety outcome.
A typical headline bullet: led front-end design for a $14M debottlenecking project, delivered two months early and 6% under budget.
Pharmaceutical Process Engineer
Pharma and biotech hiring managers screen for GMP fluency before anything else. This example puts validation work (IQ/OQ/PQ, cleaning validation), technology transfer, and deviation handling ahead of general process-improvement language.
- Names the regulatory context (GMP, FDA inspections) in the first two lines
- Quantifies batch success rate, cycle time, and right-first-time performance
- Keeps a short “Regulatory experience” line instead of burying audits in bullets
Lead Chemical Engineer / Engineering Manager
For engineers who now manage engineers: a team of five to ten, a site capital budget, and a seat in the safety and reliability conversation. The bullets measure outcomes that belong to a team (turnaround schedule adherence, project portfolio value, incident rate) rather than individual tasks.
Petrochemical / Oil and Gas Process Engineer
Written for refinery, gas-processing, and olefins plants, where scale is the first thing a reader checks. Barrels per day, tons per year, or unit capacity appears in the summary, and the bullets cover heat integration, turnaround planning, and unit-level optimization.
Example result: cut fired-heater fuel use by 7% through pinch-based heat integration, saving about $640K a year at 40,000 bbl/day.
Chemical Engineering Intern / Co-op
A one-page resume for a sophomore or junior chasing a co-op or summer internship. Coursework and lab projects carry the page, so each is described by what you designed, measured, or optimized, not by the course title.
Includes a skills block for lab techniques and software, plus leadership in an AIChE student chapter or design team for the soft-skills signal.
Process Development / R&D Engineer
For engineers who take a process from bench to pilot to plant. Results lean on scale-up ratio, design-of-experiments gains, and the number of processes transferred to manufacturing, with patents or publications in a compact line at the bottom.
- States the scale jump explicitly (for example, 2 L to 500 L)
- Shows a DoE or statistical-analysis win with a yield or purity figure
- Keeps patents and publications to one line, not a full bibliography
Copy These Chemical Engineer Resume Summary and Bullet Examples
These four blocks cover the situations chemical engineers ask about most. Copy the structure, then replace every bracket and number with your own.
Entry-Level Summary
Lead with the project and the tools, since you do not have years to lead with.
Chemical engineering graduate (B.S., ABET-accredited) with a senior design project on a [process, e.g. ethanol-water distillation train] simulated in Aspen Plus, plus a [duration] co-op in [industry]. FE exam passed [year]. Seeking a process engineer role where I can apply [two skills, e.g. mass-balance modeling and statistical process control].
Process Optimization Bullets
For a plant engineer with two to six years of experience. Each bullet carries an action, a unit, and a measured result.
– Raised [unit] throughput by [X]% by [specific change, e.g. retuning reflux ratio and replacing trays], deferring a [$ amount] expansion
– Cut steam consumption by [X]% on the [unit] through heat integration, saving about [$ amount] a year
– Improved batch yield from [X]% to [Y]% by [method, e.g. a DoE on temperature and feed rate], reducing off-spec product by [Z] tons annually
Process Safety Bullets
For roles that own hazard analysis. Scope plus follow-through is what separates a safety engineer from a safety attendee.
– Facilitated [number] HAZOP and LOPA studies across [number] units, closing [X]% of action items within [timeframe]
– Reviewed [number] management-of-change requests a year, preventing [specific type of change] from reaching startup without a hazard review
– Led the incident investigation for [event type], implementing corrective actions that cut similar near-miss reports by [X]%
Senior Engineer Summary
For eight-plus years of experience. Name the scale and the money, then the credential.
Senior Chemical Engineer (PE) with [X] years in [sector, e.g. specialty chemicals], leading capital projects up to [$ amount] and mentoring [number] engineers. Delivered [specific result, e.g. a 12% capacity increase at the Houston plant] with zero recordable incidents. Expert in [two or three tools or methods, e.g. Aspen HYSYS, PHA facilitation, and front-end loading].
What Hiring Managers Read for on a Chemical Engineer Resume
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that chemical engineers held about 21,900 jobs in 2025, and that employment is projected to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations. About 1,100 openings are projected each year, on average, over the decade. The median annual wage was $125,040 in May 2025.
The same BLS page shows where those jobs sit: chemical manufacturing accounts for 28 percent, engineering services 11 percent, and research and development in the physical, engineering, and life sciences 9 percent. That spread is why one generic resume underperforms. A plant hiring manager and a design-consultancy hiring manager are looking for different evidence.
Across sectors, the same five things get checked first:
- The plant and the process. Name the unit operations and the product, not just “chemical processes.”
- Scale. Tons per year, barrels per day, batch size, or capital dollars.
- Economics. Yield, energy, or cost improvements stated as a percentage and a dollar figure.
- Safety. Incident performance, hazard-study involvement, and the safety framework you worked inside.
- Tools. Simulation, control-system, and data tools named exactly as a posting names them.
Chemical Engineering Results Worth Putting a Number On
“Improved efficiency” tells a reader nothing. These are the measures chemical engineers can usually pull from plant records, project files, or lab notebooks, each with the unit that makes it credible.
- Throughput and capacity: tons per year, barrels per day, or batches per month, and the percentage gained.
- Yield and selectivity: the before and after, such as 91% to 94.5%, and what it was worth in product or raw material.
- Energy and utilities: steam, fuel gas, electricity, or cooling water saved, as a percentage and a dollar figure.
- Quality and off-spec: off-spec tons avoided, first-pass quality rate, or customer complaints reduced.
- Safety and reliability: hazard studies completed, action items closed, recordable incidents, or unplanned downtime hours.
- Project delivery: capital value, schedule variance, and budget variance on projects you owned.
- Scale-up: the size of the jump, such as bench to pilot to plant, and the number of processes transferred.
Pick two or three per bullet. If a number is confidential, use a ratio or a range (“about 8%”) rather than dropping the result altogether.
Anatomy of a Chemical Engineer Resume
Every example above follows the same four-part skeleton. Here is each part as an adaptable snippet. A single-column professional resume template keeps all four easy to scan.
Header and Contact Line
One line is enough. Add your PE license or FE status here if you hold it, since it is a screening credential.
[Full Name], [PE or FE status, if held]
[City, State] • [Phone] • [Email] • [LinkedIn URL]
Professional Summary
Three lines: title and years, sector and scale, then one measurable result.
[Level] chemical engineer with [X years] in [sector, e.g. petrochemicals], supporting [unit or plant scale]. Delivered [specific result with a number]. Skilled in [tool 1], [tool 2], and [standard or method].
Experience Bullet Formula
Action verb, unit or system, method, then the result in units a plant manager recognizes.
[Action verb] [unit or process] by [method], achieving [metric improvement] and saving [$ amount or tons or hours] per [year or batch].
Skills Section
Group by type so a reader finds the tool they are scanning for. The resume skills section guide covers how to prioritize what you list.
Process Simulation: Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, [other]
Data and Control: MATLAB, Python, [historian or DCS system]
Safety and Quality: HAZOP, LOPA, PSM, [GMP or ISO if relevant]
Methods: Design of experiments, Six Sigma [belt level], root cause analysis
How to List FE, PE, and Credentials on a Chemical Engineer Resume
The BLS notes that licensure is not required for entry-level chemical engineers. Experienced engineers may pursue a Professional Engineer (PE) license, which requires an accredited engineering degree, a passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, several years of relevant work experience, and a passing score on the PE exam.
On the resume, that translates into a simple ladder:
- New graduate: list the ABET-accredited degree, and the FE exam if you have passed it. NCEES describes the FE as designed for recent graduates and students close to finishing an EAC/ABET-accredited degree, and it has a Chemical discipline.
- Four-plus years in: NCEES says the PE exam is for engineers with a minimum of four years of post-college work experience, and Chemical is one of its disciplines. If you pass, put “PE” after your name and the state in the header.
- No PE: do not apologize for it. Many plant-based process roles never mention it, so check each posting and lead with what it does ask for.
Other credentials that belong in a short “Certifications” line rather than a paragraph include Six Sigma belts, OSHA 30, and any process-safety or GMP training you completed. Keep the section to what is current and relevant.
Chemical Engineer Skills by Sector
The skills section is where a generic resume gets tailored fastest. Match the row below to your target employer and name those tools and standards exactly.
| Sector | Lead with | Tools and standards to name |
|---|---|---|
| Petrochemical and refining | Unit capacity, heat integration, turnaround support | Aspen HYSYS, plant historian, OSHA PSM |
| Pharma and biotech | Validation, technology transfer, deviations and CAPA | GMP, IQ/OQ/PQ, batch records |
| Specialty and fine chemicals | Scale-up, batch yield, cycle time | Design of experiments, Aspen Plus, JMP or Minitab |
| Engineering services | Front-end design, equipment sizing, P&ID deliverables | HYSYS, P&IDs, AutoCAD, cost estimating |
| R&D and process development | Bench-to-pilot scale-up, experimental design | DoE, MATLAB, pilot-plant instrumentation |

Strong vs. Weak Chemical Engineer Resume Summary
The difference is not polish. It is specificity: a unit, a scale, and a result a plant manager can check.
Process engineer with 5 years in specialty chemicals, supporting a 60,000 t/yr batch plant. Raised overall yield from 91% to 94.5% through a DoE on reactor temperature and feed rate, saving about $380K a year. Proficient in Aspen Plus and PHA facilitation.
Motivated chemical engineer with strong analytical skills seeking a challenging role where I can utilize my knowledge of chemical processes and contribute to company success.
Both candidates might be equally capable. Only the first resume proves it before a reader picks up the phone.
Chemical Engineer Resume Mistakes That Cost Interviews
Most of these come from writing the resume around the degree instead of the plant. Check your draft against the list.
Avoid these on a chemical engineer resume
- Listing “process optimization” with no unit, method, or measured result
- Leaving out the scale of the plant or project
- Putting a long coursework list ahead of the senior design project or internship
- Naming simulation software you have only opened once
- Describing safety work as “ensured compliance” without a study count or outcome
- Using one generic resume for a pharma plant and a refinery
- Using a decorative multi-column layout, which makes it harder for software to attach dates and titles to the right role
That last point comes from our own resume template parsing test, which found that decorative layouts reduce how reliably a parser recovers job titles and dates. A single-column ATS-friendly template avoids the problem.

Create ResumeChemical Engineer Resume FAQ
What should a chemical engineer resume include?
A chemical engineer resume should include a three-line summary, experience bullets that name the unit, the method, and a measured result, a skills block grouped by software, safety standards, and methods, and an education section with the ABET-accredited degree and FE or PE status. Add the plant scale (tons per year, barrels per day, or project value) wherever you can.
What skills should I put on a chemical engineer resume?
Pair the simulation and analysis tools you have actually used (Aspen Plus or HYSYS, MATLAB, a statistics package) with the standards and methods your target sector expects, such as OSHA PSM and HAZOP for process plants or GMP for pharma. Soft skills like cross-functional communication are better shown inside a bullet than listed alone.
Should I put my GPA on a chemical engineer resume?
Include it as a new graduate if it is strong, and leave it off after a few years of experience. By then your plant results carry more weight than a number from your degree.
How long should a chemical engineer resume be?
One page for a new graduate or an engineer with under roughly ten years of experience. A second page is reasonable for a senior engineer with several major projects or a PE license and publications, as long as the second page is not padding.
How do I write a chemical engineer resume with no work experience?
Lead with the senior design project, lab research, and any co-op or internship, and describe each one by what you designed, simulated, or measured. Our resume examples hub has more entry-level samples across professions.
Is a PE license required to get a chemical engineering job?
No. The BLS says licensure is not required for entry-level chemical engineers. It becomes a bigger asset later in a career, so list it if you have it and do not worry about it if you do not.
How do I move from the lab or plant floor into a project or management role?
Show scope growth over time: from supporting a unit to owning a project to leading people. A summary that names project value and team size helps, and the project manager resume examples show how to present budget and schedule results.
